Guides

How to plan a multi-city Europe trip with kids.

Direct answer

Lock your flights first. Choose a straight route rather than a loop. Cap hotel moves at three or four. Give each city enough nights so travel days don't swallow your visit. Put family needs (rooms, no early wake-ups, dinner times, luggage) into the plan before picking sights. Then book in a clear sequence.

Recommended action: explore our 14-day Paris–Switzerland–Germany route with your flights.

  • 8–10 days: Two cities, plus a possible airport buffer night.
  • 12–14 days: Three cities is the sweet spot; four only if the last is an airport stay.
  • 16 days: Three relaxed city stays, or four if you don't mind an extra travel day.
  • A kid-friendly trip leaves open afternoons on purpose.

Step-by-step decisions

StepDecisionRecommended choice
1Trip datesFly into one city, home from another (e.g. CDG in, FRA out)
2City countThree main city stays + one final airport buffer night
3DirectionWest to east, placing the Swiss Alps in the scenic middle
4Night splitLongest stay where jet lag and walking hit hardest (usually Paris)
5Travel daysNo departures before 9:00 AM; door-to-door travel under 6 hours
6What to skipA fourth hotel move, or rushing to the airport on a long train day

Worked example

Our sample family lands in Paris on June 12 and flies home from Frankfurt on June 25 (13 nights). Recommended route: Paris 5 nights, Lucerne 4 nights, Munich 3 nights, Frankfurt 1 night. Skipped on purpose: Strasbourg as an overnight (would add an extra hotel move) and Interlaken as a separate hotel (best enjoyed as an easy day trip from Lucerne). See our full 14-day itinerary.

Common mistakes

  • Five cities in two weeks. The fifth city turns into a stressful travel day instead of a vacation.
  • Picking sights before finding rooms. Finding hotel rooms that comfortably sleep a family of four is the real constraint.
  • A round-trip loop that returns to Paris. That wastes an entire day that could have been spent in the Alps.
  • Buying train tickets before booking hotels. That locks you into rigid dates before your lodging is confirmed.

What to verify

Airport check-in times at Frankfurt, hotel extra-bed and family room policies, train seat reservation rules, and making sure your partner is excited about each stop. Next: read what to book first.

Good to know & updates

  • Recommended stop counts are designed for 8–16 day family vacations on this route.
  • Multi-city flight recommendations assume standard routes into Paris (CDG) and out of Frankfurt (FRA); reverse the direction if airfares favor it.
  • Continue with our route guide or family trip planner.
